Recent job · Popanyinning

Mains connection: over $50,000. Off‑grid: less than half.

A new home on a rural block in Popanyinning, in the Wheatbelt. Connecting to the grid was quoted at more than $50,000, so the owners asked us for an off-grid option instead.

  • 15kW solar array on the roof of the home
  • 10kW three-phase Sigenergy inverter running the whole house
  • 30kWh of battery storage in a dedicated shed, with room to add more
  • Remote monitoring over 4G, so we can see how the system is running without driving out

The finished system came in at less than half the cost of the mains connection, with the federal solar and battery discounts applied.

Who it suits

When off-grid makes sense.

New homes on rural blocks

If the nearest pole is a long way off, a grid connection can cost tens of thousands before you use a single unit of power. An off-grid system is often cheaper upfront, and there’s no power bill afterwards.

Farms and stations

Homesteads, workers’ quarters, workshops and pumps.

Unreliable rural supply

Long feeder lines with regular outages, where independence matters.

Granny flats and second dwellings

Separate lived-in dwellings on the same property can each qualify for the battery discount.

Sheds, bores and remote sites

Stand-alone solar for pumps, sheds and equipment, sized to the load.

How we design it

Sized for winter, not for the brochure.

  • Load assessment. We go through every appliance, pump, air conditioner and workshop tool, and when they run.
  • Winter and cloudy days. The solar and battery are sized for the worst weeks of the year, with the number of backup days you want.
  • Generator backup if you want it. An automatic-start generator can top up the battery when it runs low.
  • Roof or ground mount. Including trenching, cabling and a weatherproof battery location.
  • Room to grow. Battery modules and panels can be added as the property develops.
  • Rebates handled. We check eligibility and apply the solar and battery discounts on your proposal.
Federal battery discount

Battery discounts apply off-grid too. Off-grid batteries on a lived-in dwelling can get the upfront Cheaper Home Batteries discount. Sites within 1km of the grid need a VPP-capable battery, or a quoted connection cost over $30,000.

FAQ

Off-grid questions

How much does an off-grid solar system cost in WA?

It depends on how much power the property uses, how many days of backup you want and whether a generator is included. A home-sized system with around 15kW of solar and 30 to 40kWh of battery is a common starting point. We price every system from a load assessment, and the federal solar and battery discounts come off the price upfront where the site is eligible.

Is off-grid cheaper than connecting to the grid?

Often, on rural blocks. At our Popanyinning job the quoted mains connection was over $50,000, and the off-grid system came in at less than half of that. Every site is different, so we compare the two for you.

Can I get rebates on an off-grid system?

Yes, if the system meets the rules. Off-grid solar can create STCs, and off-grid batteries are eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount when installed on a dwelling that is lived in. Sheds and bore pumps on their own do not qualify for the battery discount.

What happens in winter or after several cloudy days?

We size the solar and battery for winter, not summer, and can integrate a backup generator that starts automatically when the battery runs low. Most of the year the generator never runs.

Can I add more batteries or panels later?

Yes. We design off-grid systems with room to grow, so you can add battery modules or more solar as the property develops.

Do you install off-grid systems outside Perth?

Yes. We install across regional WA, including the Wheatbelt, Peel and the South West. Travel is quoted upfront.
